Did Trump Skate?

“ …Breakin’ rocks in the hot sun, I fought the law and the law won…” I Fought the Law... Sonny Curtis…I’ll admit to a WTF moment when I first read the Supreme Court’s decision, yesterday. My initial reaction was that the court had just given Trump a total pass and let him skate over Jan 6th. Then I cooled down, re-read it, and started to think of it a little differently. The court under Chief Justice Roberts has traditionally taken the position that voters and congress should make the laws and the Supreme Court would interpret and define the constitution and law. Roberts’ decision is narrow, and addresses only immunity from presidential acts, not personal ones. As anyone who reads me knows, I’ve always treated the Supreme Court with a great deal of respect and generally consider them to be “the adult in the room”, in most things involving government. That said, I did raise an eyebrow over the length of time in took them to deal with this issue. I’ve never been a conspiracy theorist, but another person might say they were intentionally helping Trump “slow walk” his criminal cases. I’m not saying that; I’m keeping an open mind. Besides, the Supremes may have unintentionally screwed Trump by remanding his case back to the trial court in the District of Columbia and Judge Tanya Chutkan to decide which of his actions are presidential and which are personal. This is the same judge who’s been sending Jan 6th rioters to prison like she’s dealing cards and had shown no patience in dealing with Trump’s delaying tactics. All in all, I must give credit to Trump, his delaying tactics worked-there’s no way any of his three criminal cases will go to trial before the election. But there is that one nagging little problem that remains, he must win that election. Get elected, have your MAGA attorney general you appoint dismiss all the cases, or just pardon yourself-problem solved. The only hitch in that theory is a large part of the American public is going to go batshit. Remember the anti-war civil unrest of the 60’s?... that’s going to look like a junior varsity game. There’s another downside that nobody has thought about- if you manage to win the electoral college, you’ll still lose the popular vote by a few million and the “down ballot” effect might give you a democratic house and senate. If that happens, you’ll be impeached and removed from office before the cherry trees bloom in DC, and you’ll be available for a criminal trial in front of Judge Chutkan. In step with the supreme court ruling, Judge Chutkan will hold hearings, read briefs, and rule on presidential versus private actions. Following the hearings, Special Counsel Jack Smith will amend the charges, delete ones that don’t meet the guidelines, and possibly seek new indictments and hopefully one them will be sedition, because that’s what you should have been charged with the first time around…
